Truant.J’s Ruminations emerges as a deeply personal record, one that trades in catharsis as much as rhythms. Having built his reputation on dark textures, gritty atmospherics, and emotional weight, he uses this EP to mark a turning point: not abandoning his shadowy roots, but mastering them, refining the edges, and finding clarity in the murk.
At its core, Ruminations is an expression of overcoming. According to Truant.J himself, the EP reflects “working through some challenging things in my life,” arriving eventually at a place of better mental and emotional footing, a “celebration” of survival and growth. Leads, percussion, and grooves are more pronounced, which gives the EP greater immediate impact in a live or DJ context.
The balance between tension and calm is perhaps one of the EP’s greatest achievements. Truant.J has spoken about this being something intuitive, built through experience; on Ruminations, that equilibrium is sharper than ever. You’ll hear moments of brooding buildup, of ominous textures hanging in space, then bursts of clarity and energy — but never a cheap release. The emotional weight remains, but it never overwhelms. It comes across as the emotional and technical anchor for the EP — the North Star, as Truant.J puts it — around which others orbit. In that title track you can feel the “conquering” of past struggles, the emergence of freedom: it's more than an opening billboard; it gives the EP its narrative spine.
Overall, Ruminations feels simultaneously like a continuation of Truant.J’s identity and a turning point. That dark driving techno he has been exploring is here in strong form, more confident. And while there are hints of something different to come, the EP doesn’t feel transitional in a weak sense — rather, it feels like arrival. For fans of Truant.J, it will feel familiar but elevated; for newcomers, it's a powerful entry point: atmospheric, physical, emotionally honest, and built for both listening and the dancefloor.
