Dina Summer presents Children Of The Night

There’s always a danger with darkwave and electroclash revivalism: once the analogue synths, sequencers and gothic references are in place, it can become little more than costume. Dina Summer largely avoid that trap on Children Of The Night.

The trio’s strength lies in the tension between pop songwriting and club functionality. “Burning Heart” is deceptively catchy, while “Fuel” and “Komodo 3000” lean harder into EBM-inflected propulsion. The title track sits somewhere between the two, pairing an imposing bassline with the kind of oversized synth melody that has become one of the group’s signatures.

The record is also less uniform than its aesthetic might initially suggest. “Rat Race” and “On The Road” introduce a rougher darkwave sensibility, giving the album some breathing room beyond the dancefloor.

At its best, Children Of The Night feels like a meeting point between early electroclash irreverence and contemporary club culture. Dina Summer understand that the trick isn't to recreate the past, but to make it move again.
